GV TOP 5: OPM Bands
Kamikazee is a Filipino pop punk band formed in 2000. The band is composed of Jay Contreras, Jomal Linao, Led Tuyay, Puto Astete and Bords Burdeos.
The band is composed of five members who met in college at the College of Fine Arts of the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Kamikazee’s early gigs were mostly on-campus events in UP Diliman like the annual UP Fair. Before they were signed to a major label, they went by the name “Kamikazee Cornflakes”, eventually shortened to the current name“Kamikazee” for easier memory. Their early shows included renditions of the songs “Mmm Sarap”, “Tsinelas”, a cover of Ariel Rivera’s “Sana Kahit Minsan”, and Britney Spears‘ Lucky. Their live performances have since been known for using expletives, sexually suggestive dances, and references to genitalia.
4. Urban Dub
Urbandub is a Filipino rock band from Cebu City, Philippines. Since its inception in 2000, the band’s line-up has consisted of Gabby Alipe (vocals, guitar), John Dinopol (guitar, vocals), and Lalay Lim (bass, vocals). The band’s current drummer is Janjan Mendoza, who has been with the band since 2003.
Urbandub is the first indie band in the Philippines to release albums nationwide with the assistance of a major label. The label also featured Urbandub in a Pinoy rock compilation entitled “FULL VOLUME”, with a remake of Sade’s “No Ordinary Love”. The band recently garnered the attention of fans throughout Southeast Asia with a recent tour in Singapore.
3. Silent Sanctuary
Silent Sanctuary is a 5-piece Filipino band. They entered the OPM (Original Pilipino Music) scene in 2006 with their songs “Rebound”, “Ikaw Lamang”, “Summer Song”, “Kundiman”, and “Ingat ka”. In their second studio album called Mistaken for Granted, the album’s first single is called “Hay Naku” and the second one is called “Hiling”.
Eraserheads (sometimes stylized as ERASƎRHEADS) is a Filipino rock band formed in 1989. Consisting of Ely Buendia,Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala and Marcus Adoro, the band became one of the most successful, most influential, critically acclaimed, and significant bands in the history of OPM. Eraserheads are also credited for spearheading a second wave of Manila band invasions, paving the way for a host of Philippine alternative rock bands.
The band released several singles, albums, and EPs that reached number one. The band achieved commercial success with their third album Cutterpillow, which achieved platinum status several times. Eraserheads received the Viewer’s Choice Award for Asia from the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.
1. Parokya ni Edgar
Parokya ni Edgar (English translation: Edgar’s Parish) is a multi-award winning Filipino band formed in 1993. The band is famous for its original rock novelty songs and often satirical covers of popular songs both foreign and local. The band is adept at playing in various musical genres.
Parokya ni Edgar has been referred to by local media as “Pambansang Banda ng Pilipinas” (The National Band of the Philippines).
Despite having “Edgar” in the band’s name, none of the members are named Edgar.
